My next local campaign should be Masks, so I'm pretty damned hyped myself.

I had a feeling it was the skin itself that was causing problem, as I've listened to Max in the Harvester game and he was great, as was he in my Snuffed playtest where he managed to be a horrifyingly manipulative app on someone's phone. I think the issue with Monster Hearts is that some of the skins focus too much on a cool concept without figuring out how well they'll play with an actual narrative or the other players.

That, in turn, I think is down to the way MH kind of forces a set of social guidelines on the players - you're shitty teenagers, probably American, indulging in spooky drama and sexy times.

I'd still love to see the DnU guys give Apocalyose World a try if only because the flexibility of it allows for every skin to be viable, even the mad ones (like The Man In A Box or the Behemoth or the Space Marine Mammal) because there's way more scope to just let it all hang out. So to speak.

No money. Only pride. Redeemable nowhere.

I've got to mention it here, and this is by no means a swipe at Max, but I'm about an hour into Ep 5 of Camp Rosewater and I have to say that Penelope has been nothing but an annoyance throughout this entire campaign. I totally get that her concept is this disaffected observer who doesn't really trust anyone, but until her quick talk with Maria and Simus (where I'm at right now) her total input into the game has been fucking people up for no apparent reason, then running away when people try to get an answer out of her.

This is still a fun game to listen to, but eh, I guess I just find it a bit frustrating. All the other characters have their motivations and act on them, but Penelope's just like the M80's she keeps hurling about. Loud, distracting and without any real explanation.

For my statement, I say:

Spoiler: show
NO MAGICAL GIRLS

Ah, kidding.

I'm going to say YES to Authority By Lineage, people in this world are born to lead, whether they're fit to do it or not.

I've blasted through the whole series and I agree. I think it's because the DnU crew have such experience in this genre of 'eerie shit clashing with mundane drama' through Monster Hearts, MaOCT, etc.

Very interested what they'll do for a second season, though.

Neat. I'm holding it as a reserve playtest should my local group be a man short. We played Dread with great success and I figure if I can get this going I'll post the playtest results here.

I'll keep tinkering and throw in some jumping off points and guides for creating scenarios, but you're on the money with it being more akin to Dread than a long-term RPG.

Tabletops and You / Viscera Cleanup Detail - The RPG
« on: August 31, 2016, 04:30:13 PM »
Howdy all. Me again.

So this evening, in a fit of unchained productivity, I've concocted an idea for a dice-centric game based around the premise of Viscera Cleanup Detail. The dust has settled, the bodies have cooled and the badass hero has saved the day. You're the zero-hour-contract schlubs tasked with cleaning up the mess, destroying the evidence and trying not to die from anything the hero might've missed during their killing spree.

The basic game idea is:

You have Messes, Projects and Threats.

Mess: A big room, heap of crap or other thing you need to clear away. Represented by a heaping pile of dice. To clean them away, you select up to four of the dice and roll them. A 3+ and it's gone. Anything less...and they spread. A handful of 1d4s can get out of hand very quickly...

Project: Non-essential crap the company wants you to do, represented by an empty space for you to add dice to. You can up to four dice of any type...but the GM can try to tempt you into cutting corners or outright failing for some loot, experience or something else you desire.

Threat: A Project with a short fuse and nasty repercussions. An ominous sound in the vents. A weird beeping coming from that probably-defused bomb. That corpse getting up and shambling around. Resolved like a Project, but when it boils over, bad things happen.

The idea would be to work against a timer of some description to clear the Mess, squash Threats and complete as many Projects as possible.

Rules thus far are here.

Any thoughts? Suggestions? Might want to run this at some point to see how it flows.

Now please wash your hands.

From the This War Of Mine LP:

Y'know, apart from being in that Monster Hearts game as the most passive-aggressive vampire in existence.

It's canon.

Or, should it be 'cannon'?

Susan: "Well that went better than expected."
Matt: "Yeah, we didn't even need the terrorism."
Charlie: "The terrorism helped!"
James: "Oh, that's going in the quotes page..."
