General Discussion / Secret Annual Gift Exchanger Thing
« on: November 07, 2016, 09:41:50 AM »
Hey hey!  I just realized it was November and that will tie into the next month.  Anyway, for the past couple of years we have done a secret Santa gift exchange thing.  Gifts can be funny, personal, and most importantly $20 or less.

Anyway if you want to be a part of it this year, it's a 2-step process.

1) Fill out the following template of your favorite things and post in this thread:
Quote
Books:
RPGs:
Movies:
Videogames:
Interests:

2) Send me a PM with your mailing information and whether or not you are willing to ship internationally.

If we have enough participants (which I'm gonna call 5 or more) by December 1st 5th I will use a completely random system to sort participants and the gift-giving cycle will begin.

General Discussion / Introduction Thread
« on: November 03, 2016, 10:20:46 PM »
Hey I just realized we didn't have one of these so oops.  Anyway let's cover the basics.

Who: I'm Matt.  I founded the podcast back in early 2011 and have been more or less running it since.
What: I'm podcaster/streamer/furry/crockpot extraordinaire.  I like the music of John Roderick, Johnathan Coulton, John Flansbury and John Linnell. . . basically any band that is led by someone named John (except weirdly for John Lennon).
When: I'm 29 but most of those things happened recently.  My taste in music and games was wildly different in college (a lot more anime and AAA productions)
Where: Chi-town baby.  Go cubs (although I live on the south side).
Why: I don't know.  Probably a lack of attention in grade school and now I need constant validation from anyone?  Take your pick.

If you want to introduce yourself this thread is great for that.  Maybe follow this format, maybe don't.  I'm not your dad.

That's advice to take to the fuckin bank man

I would recommend The National Anthem as an episode that is not your first.  I'm not gonna say it's darker than the others but it's definitely a different vibe of unnerving and not a great precedent for what the series is.

If you want to try it, now is maybe the best time so long as you have no plans to try and take over gyms. The newest updates added a lot more Pokemon spawns and there's other stuff like the buddy system

that was the bit where the kid went to rat jail, right?

Yeah, after they take on a new kid and he decides to kill them one by one (and gets pretty close a few times)

Moved this to a dedicated child board for ease of access and organization.

Charlie: "What's his name... the peas guy... Orson Wells!"
Matt, breaking into laughter: "I know what you mean by 'the peas guy!"

I applaud the Animorphs TV show for the effort.  They tried so hard.  They really tried.

And also the theme song.

It's "good"

In the last book I read he ate a plate of nachos and compared it to the time he drank motor oil.

Also every book after Ax gets introduced he keeps eating progressively more garbage.  Poor perfect alien son.

There's also this weirdness where they have to wage this guerilla war between their normal day to day activities.  In the second book they're trying to figure out how to spy on one of the controllers and they're like "well I have to prep for a test on Thursday, and it's Cassie's dad's birthday the next day, and I've got homework too. . . so like maybe we do it Saturday?"

Keeping in mind the idea that they don't have all the power and they need to pick their battles to keep things clear while also having to maintain the cover of their normal everyday lives to avoid suspicion from the secret aliens that could be anyone keeps the stakes fairly small and the need to stick to their day-to-day allows the stories to be emotionally grounded and also leave in weird mundane stakes like Rachel's dad moving away and asking her (pressuring her to say) if she wants to join him.

You can see in Megamorphs 1 where they don't add any real emotional grounding and it becomes more of a pure adventure book that the format breaks down when the story becomes huge and they're like fighting giant monsters in broad daylight.  Megamorphs is one of the longer and more complicated books in the series and the whole thing just feels kinda empty because there's no accompanying emotional throughline.

Oh yeah this shit is crazy and I can't believe how violent and graphic this children's book is.

Needless to say, even if you don't take the whole thing, it encapsulates a local problem very well and does a good variation on monster of the week
